New Year’s Resolution: A More Sustainable 2022
Shop Goodwill and Help the Planet
This is the time of year many are thinking about their resolutions for the upcoming year. A goal to be healthier usually tops the lists, but perhaps living a more sustainable lifestyle comes to mind for your 2022 goals. After all, the way you shop can be a simple yet impactful way to give back to the planet! Help achieve sustainability when you shop Goodwill.
A survey finds the average American throws away about 85 pounds of clothes every year. Most textiles are not recyclable, therefore contributing to the microplastic pollution in our oceans. By shopping for second-hand fashion, you can help prevent the harmful impact clothes have on the environment. Many of our social media influencers feel the same way.
“I love shopping at Goodwill because, as we all know, the fashion industry is one of the most polluted industries on this earth. I love fashion, I love shopping – I have a shopping addiction – but at Goodwill, I can shop ethically.” – Kristen Fine, local sustainable fashion influencer (@krislynnfine).
Not only are you helping the Earth, but you will inevitably find treasures along the way as you shop at thrift stores. Goodwill stores have items such as pants, jeans, blouses, sweaters, blazers, dresses, ties, shoes and more that can make a great addition to your wardrobe without breaking the bank. There are also two Good Threads Boutiques in Moore (805 S. Eastern) and Edmond (1632 S. Broadway), where amazing name-brand items are offered at an affordable price.
“I love shopping with a cause and a purpose. There’s nothing better than the feeling that your shopping is giving back. It really makes me feel great to support the Goodwill mission with my sustainable shopping.” – Alondrea Love Jarvis, local sustainable fashion influencer (@alondrealovejarvis)
With the help of our shoppers and donors, Goodwill Industries of Central Oklahoma diverted more than 18 million pounds of items from going into the landfill in 2020 alone.
“If I can shop at Goodwill to help save the environment, then why not?” – Joy Eben-Spiff, local sustainable fashion influencer (@joyebenspiff)
Many items that are donated to us but are not in good condition due to damage or defects, are taken to our warehouse in downtown Oklahoma City to be processed for recycling through third-party vendors. In fact, your shoes could very well end up being turned into flooring, and your clothes may end up in a third-world country clear across the globe.
Start the New Year off right with the goal of saving our planet one clothing item at a time!
