Goodwill was founded in Oklahoma City in 1936 through the advocacy of journalist Edith Johnson.
When Publisher E.K. Gaylord heard about the philosophy of Goodwill Industries, he asked Johnson to visit several operating sites around the country. She traveled to Missouri and Ohio before returning to Oklahoma to recommend the organization of Oklahoma Goodwill Industries, Inc. in 1936.
Today, Goodwill Central Oklahoma aims to serve a diverse range of individuals, focusing on underrepresented communities including youth ages 14-20, people with disabilities, those currently or previously incarcerated, and Oklahomans struggling with economic barriers to employment services.
In 2022, Goodwill Industries of Central Oklahoma received a three-year accreditation from CARF International, an esteemed global accrediting agency. This marks the first time Goodwill has earned a Three-Year Accreditation, following a comprehensive evaluation of our operations and services by CARF personnel. This achievement reflects the high quality and person-centered services we provide to individuals facing employment challenges. Receiving CARF accreditation is the highest honor an organization can achieve, demonstrating Goodwill’s commitment to excellence in delivering measurable, accountable, and high-quality services.
