Opening Doors to Opportunity: Goodwill Central Oklahoma Celebrates the Grand Opening of its Opportunity Center
On July 9, Goodwill Central Oklahoma celebrated more than the opening of a new building—it celebrated a new chapter of opportunity for individuals and families across central Oklahoma.
Community leaders, partners, donors, elected officials, and supporters gathered for the grand opening of the new Goodwill Opportunity Center, a first-of-its-kind community resource hub that brings workforce development, career services, and essential support together under one roof. Located on Goodwill’s Reno and Blackwelder campus in Oklahoma City, the Opportunity Center is designed to help Oklahomans overcome barriers to employment and build brighter futures.
“This isn’t simply the opening of a new building,” said Melissa Richey, Vice President of Marketing & Development for Goodwill Central Oklahoma, during the ceremony. “It’s the beginning of a new chapter for Goodwill Central Oklahoma and for the thousands of individuals and families who will walk through these doors in search of opportunity.”
Transforming a Building—and Lives
Not long ago, the Opportunity Center was an empty warehouse. Today, it stands as a welcoming space where people can access the tools, guidance, and encouragement they need to achieve long-term success.
“The transformation of this building reflects a much larger investment: an investment in people,” said Goodwill Central Oklahoma President & CEO Will Lufburrow. “The Opportunity Center was created to address those challenges in one place.”
Rather than asking individuals to navigate multiple agencies across the community, the Opportunity Center creates a streamlined pathway to employment by connecting career coaching, skills training, supportive services, and community partners in one convenient location.
The center offers employment and career services, digital literacy and workforce training, housing navigation, transportation assistance, health and wellness resources, legal services, financial education, counseling, a food pantry, and community gathering spaces—all available to help individuals overcome barriers and move toward economic independence.
In 2025 alone, Goodwill Central Oklahoma served more than 4,500 individuals through its workforce development programs, helping 770 people secure employment, assisting clients in earning 686 workforce training certificates, and preparing more than 1,000 résumés and cover letters. Those achievements represent parents providing for their families, individuals rebuilding after setbacks, and people discovering opportunities they once believed were out of reach.
A Community Working Together
At the heart of the Opportunity Center is collaboration.
Partner organizations including EMBARK, HOPE Community Services, Community Health Centers of Oklahoma, Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma, and Goodwill’s own workforce development team provide coordinated, wraparound services that address the whole person—not just employment.
“Hope is not an abstract idea,” said Lisa Dillon, Vice President of Workforce Development. “It is something that is built through access, through connection, and through real support that meets people where they are.”
When someone walks through the Opportunity Center’s doors, they begin working alongside Goodwill staff to identify their goals, navigate barriers, and create a personalized plan for success. Whether someone is searching for their first job, rebuilding after a life transition, or pursuing new career opportunities, they’ll find a coordinated support system designed to help them move forward.
“Everything provided to clients will be provided FREE OF CHARGE,” Dillon shared. “Together, these partners create a system of support that is comprehensive, responsive, and centered on the whole person.”
The Power of Hope
One of the most moving moments of the grand opening came from Goodwill client Arolyn Williams, who shared her personal journey of resilience.
After facing homelessness, health challenges, and countless job rejections, Williams enrolled in Goodwill’s workforce training program.
“When I started this program, I barely had the energy to believe that things could get better for me,” Williams shared. “But I’m so glad that I walked through those doors. I left with new skills, a new résumé, and a shiny new certificate. But I also left with hope.”
Her story served as a powerful reminder that behind every résumé, training class, and career opportunity is a person working toward a brighter future.
Walking in Their Shoes
Following the ribbon cutting, guests participated in Walk In Their Shoes, an immersive self-guided experience designed exclusively for the Opportunity Center.
The interactive journey followed the fictional story of “Susan,” representing the very real experiences many Goodwill clients face as they navigate barriers to employment, housing, transportation, healthcare, and stability. Along the way, visitors met Goodwill staff and community partners who play a critical role in helping individuals overcome obstacles and move toward lasting independence.
The experience offered guests a deeper understanding of the challenges many Oklahomans encounter—and the life-changing impact that coordinated support can have.
Investing in Oklahoma’s Future
Since 1936, Goodwill Central Oklahoma has empowered individuals through job training, employment services, and workforce development programs funded by donations and purchases made in Goodwill stores.
The Opportunity Center builds on that legacy by creating a centralized place where opportunity begins, barriers are addressed, and lives are transformed.
As Will Lufburrow shared, “No single organization can solve today’s workforce challenges in isolation. By bringing community organizations together in one place, we can simplify access to services, strengthen our support system, and help individuals move from crisis to stability—and ultimately, to meaningful employment.”
The Opportunity Center is now open and ready to serve individuals seeking employment, career advancement, and greater stability.
