Debunking Myths About Goodwill: Goodwill Facts You Need to Know

Untitled (instagram Post)

Goodwill is a household name, but like many well-known organizations, it’s also the subject of several misconceptions. If you’ve ever heard rumors about Goodwill’s pricing, operations, or goals, you’re not alone. Let’s set the record straight by debunking some of the most common myths about Goodwill — and shedding light on the Goodwill facts you might not know.

Myth #1: Goodwill Isn’t Local

Fact: While Goodwill is a nationally recognized name with 155 nonprofit organizations across the U.S. and Canada, each Goodwill operates independently within its own service territory, and Goodwill Central Oklahoma is deeply committed to making a local impact. In fact, Goodwill Central Oklahoma has been a nonprofit organization serving Oklahomans since 1936, providing critical support and job opportunities right here in our community.

Although Goodwill’s mission is shared nationwide, the funds raised through our stores, donation centers, and programs stay right here in Oklahoma. Our programs, like job training, career services, and educational initiatives, are specifically designed to meet the needs of Oklahomans. Whether you’re shopping, donating, or supporting our sustainability efforts, your contributions directly benefit your neighbors and support local employment opportunities.

So, while Goodwill itself may be a household name, our focus here is firmly on Oklahoma, helping to create local jobs, reduce waste, and provide essential services to those who need it most.

Myth #2: Goodwill’s CEO Has a Million-Dollar Salary

Fact: We’re not sure where this rumor came from, but it’s important to understand that Goodwill organizations operate independently within their own territories. Each Goodwill organization, like Goodwill Central Oklahoma, is locally managed and governed by its own board of directors. This means that the salaries of leaders, including our CEO, are determined at the local level, not by Goodwill International. Goodwill Central Oklahoma’s CEO does not make a million-dollar salary.

The confusion may stem from Goodwill International, the umbrella organization that oversees the network of independent Goodwill affiliates. The CEO of Goodwill International is responsible for the overall coordination of the network, but the leadership of each Goodwill is separate and focused on its own community’s needs. Even the CEO of Goodwill International doesn’t have a million-dollar salary! (as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, our executive salaries are a matter of public record).

At Goodwill Central Oklahoma, we’re proud to operate in a way that puts our resources back into local programs. For example, 85 cents of every dollar you spend at Goodwill goes directly to supporting vital community programs like job training, career services, digital literacy classes, and initiatives that help individuals build a better future. When you shop or donate, you’re helping to create local job opportunities and invest in the sustainability and well-being of your own community.

Myth #3: Goodwill Doesn’t Help People in Need

Fact: Quite the opposite! Goodwill is rooted in helping people facing challenges to employment. and its programs are designed to give individuals the tools to thrive. Through job training, career services, and employment programs, Goodwill has helped millions of people in need gain the skills necessary to enter the workforce and improve their lives. In fact, Goodwill provides free services such as resume writing, job placement assistance, and career development programs to help individuals build fulfilling careers. So, when you donate or shop at Goodwill, you’re supporting these life-changing programs.

Myth #4: Goodwill’s Prices Are Too High

Fact: When compared to buying new items, Goodwill’s prices are incredibly affordable. Shopping second-hand is not only budget-friendly, but it’s also a great way to support a more sustainable and circular economy. Many of the items at Goodwill are unique, one-of-a-kind treasures you won’t find in typical retail stores, so you’re getting something special at a fraction of the cost of brand-new goods.

Purchasing from Goodwill helps divert items from landfills, reducing waste and giving these items a second life. In fact, shopping second-hand is one of the easiest ways to lessen your environmental footprint. By choosing to buy pre-owned items instead of new, you’re supporting sustainability efforts and helping reduce the demand for new manufacturing, which uses valuable resources and energy.

So not only are you saving money by shopping at Goodwill, you’re also positively impacting the planet and helping fund local programs that create job opportunities and support people in your community. It’s a win-win!

Myth #5: Goodwill Is a For-Profit and Greedy Organization

Fact: Goodwill is a nonprofit organization with a mission to empower individuals and improve communities. Contrary to the myth of being a greedy, for-profit company, Goodwill reinvests all its proceeds into the community to provide essential services like job training and placement, educational programs, and financial assistance to people in need. In 2023 alone, Goodwill organizations nationwide diverted over 4 billion pounds of clothing from landfills through resale, recycling, and repurposing. Additionally, Goodwill provides jobs to over 900 individuals across a variety of sectors, including retail, warehouse, administrative, and security roles.

By shopping at Goodwill, you’re supporting these vital efforts and helping to make a positive, lasting impact in your local community.
